Interview with Donzilia, Nodar, 10 June 2008

Luis: Donzilia, are these sown or planted?
Donzilia: First they are sown and then planted.
Luis: So it is just like lettices.
Donzilia: Exactly.
Luis: Do you buy the seeds or use some from previous years?
Donzilia: Most of the times we buy.
Luis: You put the seed in a small corner, right?
Donzilia: Exactly. We put the seeds in a small corner of the field and then they are transplanted.
Luis: In which period do you put the seeds?
Donzilia: Normally around November... October. Some people do it in September, but here as it is colder we do it later, And we plant the cabbages in January / February
Luis: And then you pick them in early Summer...
Donzilia: It is like this: Here there are two types... Actually three different types of cabbages. This type over there comes earlier so we are already eating them. Those ones down there come later. And finally there is another type that we pick even later.
Luis: But you pick them on different periods because you planted so, or is it the quality that is different?
Donzilia: They are three different types of cabbages. “Bull’s heart”, “short feet” and “bacalá”.

Luis: Why you are putting theses leaves aside?
Donzilia: For the rabbits, pigs and chicken

Luis: Are you about to pick the cabbages? One or two weeks more?
Donzilia: We still have to wait until they are like these ones. With this sort of ball inside the cabbage. These will be picked around late July / Early August.
